System Maintenance 07/13 & 07/20

On Saturday 07/13, IT@Sam plans to migrate the Domain Network and Wireless Network beginning at 5:00pm and we anticipate this taking our team approximately 6 hours to complete.   What this means to you and your staff is that we will be moving any computer that is on the domain over to our new MPLS Network.   The downtime for each computer should be approximately 30 minutes but we are not able to tell you exactly what time your building will be converted so are reserving the whole 6 hours.  We have chosen this time to have the least impact to campus. 
 
If you need notification as when the network is back up, please let me know.   Off campus resources and remote.shsu.edu will be available from off campus,  it is only the on-campus domain and wireless resources that will not be available.
On Saturday 07/20, we are also planning to migrate the Private Network and Voice Network to MPLS.  The Private Network migration that will affect point of sale devices will take place from 1:30pm – 5:00pm.  The Voice Network migration that will affect all telephone services will take place from 5:00pm – 8:00pm.

Friday, February 22

  • 6 p.m. – Workstation Patches will be released that includes an update for Internet Explorer for all Windows workstations. Please be sure that you save all work and log out before leaving for the weekend.
  • 8 a.m. – 11 a.m. ResHall Network will be intermittently unavailable due to the installation of new switches. Outages should not last more than one hour.
  • 9 p.m. – 10 p.m.ODS will be reloaded during this time. Please do not run any COGNOS reports during this time. This will be a recurring update scheduled for the last Friday of each month.

Friday, March 1

  • 6 p.m. – Saturday, March 2 1 a.m. – The Banner ERP system will be upgraded during this time and all ERP services (Nell, SamWeb, My Sam, Banner SSB, and Banner INB) will be unavailable.

Network Outage

On Saturday 2/9/2012  between 12:00am and 6:00 am, LEARN our internet provider will be performing maintenance.   During this time, we will experience an approximate 30 minute network outage which will affect the entire campus.

 

Upcoming System Maintenance

IT@Sam would like to make sure that you are aware of system maintenance that will be occurring over the next few weeks.

On November 16, starting at 6 p.m. and concluding about 8 p.m., our networking staff will be changing out switches in the AB4Farrington, and Lowman Student Center buildings.  There will be intermittent outages in each of these buildings and will last no more than about 20 minutes total for each. The outage will not affect the entire building.

On November 26, starting at NOON and concluding at 2 p.m., the Ad Astra system will be upgraded. During this time you will not be able to make or request room reservations.

On November 30, starting at 6pm and concluding at approximately 3 a.m. on December 1, the Banner ERP system will undergo upgrades. During this time, Banner INB and SSB will be unavailable.

On December 18, starting at 6 p.m., the SHSU website template will be changed. There should be minimal, if any, downtime.

Continued MPLS Upgrade 8/17 6 p.m. – 8/18 6 a.m.:
Affected Services: Lee Drain Building, College of Humanities and Social Science (CHSS), Academic Building 3, Allen House, Roy Adams Building, Academic Building 4, Sam Houston Village, Raven Village, White Hall, Baldwin House, Barrett House, Creager House, Randall House, Mallon House, Jackson-Shaver Hall, Spivey House, Parkhill House

Estill Network Outage 8/17 6 p.m. – 6:30 p.m: Power supplies must be replaced in two network switches. This will be a complete outage for the Estill Classroom Building that should last no more than 30 minutes.
Affected Services: Phones and computers will not be operable during this time.

Criminal Justice Center Network Outage 8/17 6 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.: The firmware for two switches located in the Criminal Justice Center will be upgraded. This will require a reboot of the switches which will cause a network outage that will last no more than 30 minutes.
Affected Services:Phones and computers will not be operable during this time.

Dial-in Service

The SHSU dial-in internet service will no longer be available effective 09/01/11. If you currently use this service, you will need to contact a local internet service provider to establish an alternate internet connection. Some local internet providers for the Huntsville area are provided below:

DNS Changes 5/28/2010

Over the summer and fall semesters, our Systems Team will be making some changes to the DNS Infrastructure used on campus. These changes will add additional redundancy, scalability and security to our DNS servers, and should be transparent to all managed Windows and Mac workstations.

For those using unmanaged workstations on campus, you’ll need to change your DNS servers from 158.135.1.20 and 158.135.1.200 to 158.135.2.20 and 158.135.2.200. After Fall 2010, the legacy DNS server (158.135.1.20 and 158.135.1.200) will not resolve any internal SHSU domains (file and print servers, domain controllers, etc) or any external domain (google.com, msn.com, yahoo.com, etc).

Residence Hall Network

Residence halls open for occupancy starting Thursday, August 20th. One of the first things you will need to do after moving in is register your computer onto the SHSU network. Each dorm has at least one port per student. All residents in Bearkat Village, Sam Houston Village, and Raven Village, will plug into the back of the phone that is provided. Follow this guide to make sure you are plugged into the correct port in the phone: BKV, Raven Village SHV Ethernet Setup. These three dorms also have a port located in the living room. All other dorm residents will use the red Ethernet ports located in the walls of their dorm. You will need to make sure your computer already has a built in Ethernet card, or you will need to purchase one. Also, you will need to provide an Ethernet cable.

Once you have set up your computer and plugged it into the proper port, open a web browser and follow the instructions below.

  1. Read and agree to the SHSU Computer Resource Acceptable Use Policy.
  2. Type in your SHSU username and password
  3. Click SUBMIT. Once your computer has been successfully registered you will be redirected to a Microsoft webpage.
  4. If you are not directed to the SHSU Netreg page when you first launch your browser, follow the link listed below. This link will take you to various tutorials that will help you get connected to the network. You can also stop by the Helpdesk or any of the computer labs to pick up printed copies of these tutorials.
