Where did the week go? Time flies when you’re getting ready for the new semester! IT@Sam is hard at work to make sure all the technology that supports you is ready to go for Fall. We have a lot of system and software updates happening this weekend and in the few weeks to come. If you will be on campus this weekend, make sure to take note of these service outage and system maintenance times:
Deploy Skype 6.18.105 to PCs
On Friday, August 1 from 8-8:30pm, Skype 6.18.105 will be deployed to all campus PCs that are part of our managed network. This deployment will replace the current version installed on all lab, classroom, and campus workstations where the software is installed. This new version will also be made available for installation through the SHSU Installation Menu.
LEARN Network Emergency Router Changes
On Sunday, August 3, between 12:01-6:00 am, LEARN Engineers will make changes to their network to enable faster restoral of service after network disruptions. SHSU uses the LEARN Network for their Internet connection and this maintenance could cause service outages for SHSU. These outages should be short if and when they occur during this time frame.
Here’s a heads up to other service outages and maintenance times to look out for in the coming weeks, as well as new software updates to keep your workstations going.
Upgrade Internet Explorer to Version 11
On Friday, August 8 at 6 pm, IT@Sam will upgrade Internet Explorer from version 9 to version 11. The browser will be upgraded on all campus managed Windows workstations and the Remote.shsu.edu system.
Network Routers (6500 Code) Upgrade
On Friday, August 8, 6–10pm, IT@Sam will upgrade Network Routers across campus. Clients will experience total loss of network access for no more than 30 minutes within this time period. This will affect computer access, all wireless access, all telephone service and all network connected devices including fire alarms. All services should be restored by 10pm.
TouchNet Data Center Maintenance
On Friday, August 8, from 2-6 am, TouchNet will be performing routine maintenance on servers in their Data Center. Credit Card payments may be intermittently unavailable during this time.
TK20 – Vendor upgrade
TK20 will be upgrading the service at tk20.shsu.edu during the hours of 6 AM to 10 AM Monday August 11, 2014. There will be a short downtime during the maintenance window where clients are unable to access the service.
Upgrade to Internet Connection
On Saturday, August 9, from 10 am to 12 pm, the SHSU Internet connection will be upgraded from a 1-Gigabit connection to a 10-Gigabit connection. This change is required to give us additional resources for computing needs. An outage at 10am lasting 15 minutes as well as additional intermittent outages are expected throughout this change. During these outages, SHSU Services will be unavailable from off-campus workstations, and the Internet will be unavailable from on-campus workstations.
Deploy Adobe Creative Cloud to PCs
On Wednesday, August 13 from 6-8 pm, all campus managed PCs will experience a service outage to allow for the removal of Adobe CS 6, and the installation of Adobe Creative Cloud including Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop
Deploy Adobe Creative Cloud to Macs
On Wednesday, August 13 from 6-8 pm, all managed Macs on campus will experience a service outage to allow for the removal of Adobe CS 6, and the installation of Adobe Creative Cloud including Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop. This will be pushed to compatible managed Mac OSX machines to include Mavericks 10.9 and Mountain Lion 10.8 This software will also be available as On Demand from the Absolute Manage Installation menu.
Deploy Java 7 Update to Faculty/Staff Workstations
On Thursday, August 14, between 6-10 pm, Java will be updated from version 6 to version 7 on all faculty/staff managed Windows workstations.

Change Freeze 8/22 through 8/30
Once August 22 is here, IT@Sam will only make system changes that are considered an Emergency or to restore a system to proper working order. This is called our Change Freeze, which will be in effect until August 30. This Change Freeze is put into place so that the processes used to enroll students and prepare courses are not adversely impacted.
