Windows 10 upgrade coming soon

As you may have seen in the latest IT@Sam Newsletter, Windows workstations are scheduled for upgrade to Windows 10. This upgrade will begin after the conclusion of the Spring 2017 semester and should complete by the start of the Fall 2017 semester.

The look and feel for Windows 10 will be different, but most windows-10-logo-46fa00b9a1-seeklogo_comfunctionality will already be familiar to you. In addition to the change in the look and feel, there will be improvements including enhanced security, a new web browser, faster login times, and less disruptive future upgrades. Additional information and a timeline of updates will be included in upcoming IT@Sam Newsletters as well as online at www.shsu.edu/windows10.

Please take this upgrade into consideration as you and your department(s) make book adoptions and software requests for the next academic year.

Should you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Service Desk (ServiceDesk@shsu.edu or 936.294.1950).

Malware Protection Change

fireampTo protect computer workstations from malware (software that is intended to damage or disable computers and computer systems), Sam Houston State University uses a security tool by SourceFire called FireAMP. The malware discovery and analysis platform identifies advanced malware threats, and provides data necessary to understand the scope of the threat and contain it.

Until recently, threats were stopped manually. Beginning January 20, 2017, FireAMP will automatically block suspicious activity and display a pop-up message.

If you believe that a block is unwarranted, please contact the IT@Sam Service Desk at 936-294-HELP or servicedesk@shsu.edu and we will explore the threat further.
