This year one of the focus points of Data Privacy Day is ‘Safeguarding Data.’ To help you safeguard your data, we encourage you to use the SamNet Wi-Fi network and other secure Wi-Fi networks rather than SamNet Guest and unsecured Wi-Fi networks.
When using unsecured Wi-Fi networks, you run the risk of having your data intercepted by malicious people that are able to place themselves between you and the hotspot. These bad actors can easily see emails, passwords, and instant messages. (Read an eavesdropper’s account of what he was able to see and do in a June 2013 article in PCWorld.)
In addition, using a secure protocol (such as HTTPS when browsing the web) helps to reduce your risk. However, this does not protect you fully on unsecured networks. Use of sophisticated hacking tools on unsecure Wi-Fi networks can attack some of these protocols and intercept personal data.
Bottom line: It is always best to use a secure Wi-Fi network if one is available to you.
On Saturday 07/13, IT@Sam plans to migrate the Domain Network and Wireless Network beginning at 5:00pm and we anticipate this taking our team approximately 6 hours to complete. What this means to you and your staff is that we will be moving any computer that is on the domain over to our new MPLS Network. The downtime for each computer should be approximately 30 minutes but we are not able to tell you exactly what time your building will be converted so are reserving the whole 6 hours. We have chosen this time to have the least impact to campus.
If you need notification as when the network is back up, please let me know. Off campus resources and remote.shsu.edu will be available from off campus, it is only the on-campus domain and wireless resources that will not be available.
On Saturday 07/20, we are also planning to migrate the Private Network and Voice Network to MPLS. The Private Network migration that will affect point of sale devices will take place from 1:30pm – 5:00pm. The Voice Network migration that will affect all telephone services will take place from 5:00pm – 8:00pm.
This evening starting at 5pm we are performing updates to SamNet-Guest Wireless and SSLVPN. Service disruption should be no more than 15 minutes.
There will be a 3 hour outage for the SamNet wireless network on Sunday, November 13 starting at 7am. If you experience problems after 10am on that day please contact the Service Desk at 936-294-1950 and leave a message for our Operations staff so that they can look into the problem.
SHSU Computer Services has completed the initial conversion of the new SamNet wireless service. This conversion was implemented to increase your wireless coverage throughout the campus and to maintain SHSU data security and integrity while it is being accessed wirelessly.
SO how can you get connected to SamNet? Just follow these simple steps:
1.) Connect to the wireless network (or establish a wireless connection)
2.) Open any web browser and authenticate to the network using your SHSU user name and password
3.) After authentication, you can browse the Internet, access the SHSU home page, SamMenu, and SamWeb without having VPN!
4.) To print to campus networked printers, you must use Remote Desktop, if the printer you are looking for is not there, please see Adding a Printer
