Trouble Sending Email?

We’ve noticed that several of our Mac users are unable to send email off campus. If you are one of those having this problem you’ll want to verify your outgoing mail server settings.

Server: smtp.shsu.edu
SSL must be turned on with password authentication.
Port must be set as 465.

Mac Mail Users

  1. Under the Mail menu, select Preferences…
  2. Click on your email account
  3. Click on the drop-down box next to Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) and select “Edit Server List“.
  4. Ensure that the smtp server is highlighted and then click on the Advanced button.
  5. Check the following options:
    • Use default ports
    • Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)
    • choose “Password” as the Authentication.
  6. Your username and password will be the same as your email username and password.

Thunderbird Users

  1. Under the Tools menu, select Account Settings…
  2. Click on Outgoing Server (SMTP)
  3. Click on Edit
  4. Enter 465 as the port
  5. Put a check mark next to “Use name and password
  6. Click on the SSL radio button.

Always remember that you can use the “Exchange Mail” link on the main SHSU web page to send and receive email if you ever run into a problem with your chosen email client.

Please call us (x4-1950) or place a workorder if you need assistance in checking your settings.

T Drive Moves

The T: drive was moved on 11/14/08 to more dependable, faster hardware configured for high availability and redundancy.

Please take this opportunity to review what you have in your department’s T: drive. Please remove personal pictures, movies, and/or music as this directory must be used for University-business functions.

Look once again to evaluate your use of social security numbers and/or credit card information or other confidential data.

If you can no longer access any files that you could previously, please call the SHSU Helpdesk at 936.294.1950, e-mail helpdesk@shsu.edu, or create a SamWeb Computer Services work order.

Hurricane Ike Preparations

The following notice has been sent to the entire SHSU community:

University Community

Faculty & Staff: When you leave today, please make sure that you POWER OFF your computer, peripherals such as printers and scanners, and any other electronic equipment. Please also UNPLUG the equipment from the wall. If you are plugged into a surge protector, you can just turn off the surge protector. This is to ensure that your computers are not powered back on for any rolling power outages that we may have.

We are also running a full back up of our computer systems so response times may be a little slower while the backups are running.

If you have any questions, as always, please ask us.
